FEATURED PROJECT

A Lush & Layered Backyard

What began as an unremarkable outdoor space evolved into a thoughtfully designed landscape built for gathering, movement, and moments of pause. Defined by thoughtful design, timeless materials, and richly layered plantings, this transformation elevated a basic Alexandria backyard into an elegant and cohesive outdoor experience that encourages relaxation and connection.

Rather than relying on a single focal point, the design creates a sequence of spaces. Each level, pathway, and transition invites use while maintaining a sense of continuity across the entire yard.

The redesign prioritizes feel as well as function. Grade changes add visual interest while delineating living spaces and garden areas. Striking stonework, graceful staircases, and tiered retaining walls bring breathtaking definition to each space, encouraging guests to stroll the grounds, dine in elegance, then kick back long into the evening.

While hardscape elements ground the design, a rich array of native plantings brings softness, texture, and seasonal interest.

Lighting also plays a subtle but important role, highlighting transitions, improving safety, and extending the space’s usability to all hours, without overpowering its natural character.

A Purposeful Process

Process is key: learn the space, clarify the intended use, and only then design for a truly custom outdoor experience unique to the owner’s vision. In the end, the thoughtful blending of intended uses enhances both livability and visual interest.

On the more understated side, tucked-away gathering spaces encourage connection and intimacy while decadent gardens frame and enrich the architecture. Meanwhile, on the bold end of the spectrum, the generous open-air dining area anchors the space, and a show-stopping water feature defines the atmosphere with architectural pop, subtle movement, and natural sound.

Designed for How Life Is Lived Outdoors

At its core, this project reflects a shift from “having a backyard” to experiencing the home’s outdoor space. The finished living environment supports shared experiences, engagement with nature, and an ongoing embrace of seasonal changes.
